What is trademark licensing?
Trademark licensing is a process whereby a company that owns a trademark (or group of trademarks) allows another company to use the owner's trademarks on the second company's products. A perfect example is the new line of Polaris replicas for which Polaris has licensed a company named Racing Champions/Ertl to produce and sell.

Through licensing, Polaris is able to offer its customers a variety of products (beyond those manufactured by Polaris themselves) bearing the Polaris trademarks. Becoming a licensee also requires a financial commitment that includes payment of an annual minimum guaranteed royalty (paid in advance) and a royalty based on a percentage of net sales.
